What it is
The Test of Variables of Attention (T.O.V.A.) is a simple computer task. You respond to shapes on a screen, and your speed and accuracy are compared with others your age. It adds measurable data to your provider's clinical evaluation.
Who it's for
- Children and adults with trouble focusing, staying organized or sitting still
- Anyone seeking a first ADHD evaluation
- Patients already treated for ADHD who want to check how treatment is working
What to expect
- 1
Clinical evaluation
Your provider talks with you (and parents, for children) about symptoms, history and daily challenges.
- 2
The T.O.V.A. test
About 22 minutes at a computer in our clinic, pressing a button when certain shapes appear. Young children take a shorter version.
- 3
Review your results
Your provider explains the results alongside everything else learned in your evaluation.
- 4
Next steps
If ADHD is diagnosed, you'll discuss treatment options together, such as medication management or therapy.
Preparing for the test
- Get a good night's sleep and eat beforehand
- Bring glasses or hearing aids if you use them
- Ask our team whether to take your usual medication that day
- For children: bring any school reports or teacher notes you have
